Sales Promotion-It’s a Whole Different Ballgame!

Submitted by Mitch Seigel on Tues, 8/26/2014

There’s marketing orchestrated through traditional media buying, and then there’s non- traditional marketing, which is a whole different ballgame!

One of the many non-traditional ways to market your products or services is through sales promotion-with separate budgets set aside to strictly move product. Typical sales promotion platforms are Buy one-get one (BOGO), Gift with purchase (GWP) or Sweepstakes promotions. Each effectively set up for a short period of time to spike sales for a targeted product or service.

While traditional media buys can be more consistent throughout the year, sales promotions can be interwoven in the marketing mix throughout the year. There are several steps to developing a finely tuned sales promotion. Organization is a skill set that is needed by the person in charge. Then it’s empowering others around you who have special skills for that part of the promotion that will make or break it for your attempt.

My suggestion is to pick one of the platforms and become good at it before moving on to a second platform. In other words, become great at BOGOI’s before doing GWP’s. Once you get the hang of developing sales promotions it should turn into a snowball effect, re-using partners when you can, to save time and have the confidence that what you are attempting to develop will be successful.

Most of all, have fun with it, because it truly can be!

What are your challenges when it comes to developing sales promotions? I look forward to hearing your comments. Until next time...
