Relating to the Public
The masters at Public Relations are the folks up the street at the Magic Kingdom. Whether it is good news or bad, the company acts quickly to make sure the public is informed correctly and consistently. Quick, correct, consistent…
Lessons to be learned…
1. If a story is not positive in nature, it is just as important to react and connect to the public as a positive event.
2. Acting quickly doesn't give time for inaccurate stories to unfold or rumors to develop.
3. Making sure that information reported is accurate and correct maintains credibility with the public.
4. Being consistent from one story to the next regarding an event, also adds to the
credibility and tends to keep the public calm.
It is so easy to react exactly the opposite of what I described. It takes practice to get it right. It also takes the right personnel in place to follow suit where needed. When interviewing for positions that will interact with the public, look beyond the answers to the questions being asked. Check out the character of the person and definitely call references.
Who knew that when the mouse was created, he would lead us by example into so many aspects of business? My guess is that his creator had something to do with it. Today, you can find their company on top of the world, packing theme parks in attendance, making financial successes with remakes of movies, and even raising prices as we exit one of the worst recessions in history.
What are your challenges when it comes to public relations? I look forward to hearing your comments. Until next time…
