Planning Your Strategies

I’m closing in on thirty five years of assisting businesses with their marketing, and I can honestly say that over these years I have come to realize that the majority of businesses are run by the seat of their pants, rather than by the brains that created the business in the first place.

And if that is the case, are strategies in place? No, not by any means of the imagination. As an analytical person, it seems that it would be impossible to run a business without this structure. However I have also learned over the years that not being organized to me, can be a picture of organization to another individual.

The strategy behind this thought process is that it allows the business to more flexible when the need arrives. Too much structure may lead to missing golden opportunities. It’s funny but others would describe this scenario in exactly the opposite way, that if you are structured with a strategic plan in place it will force you to see the opportunities.

The answer is probably somewhere in the middle. The important aspect is that as a business owner, you have control of your future, whether it be in a structured or un-structured environment. You also need to know who the players are that would compliment you as great members of your team, and what will they bring to the table to increase the effectiveness of the business.

Don’t let your plan run on auto pilot. Always try and make sure you are on track and moving in a positive direction toward your goals. And try and stretch as much as possible with your flexibility on change in the business, as well as the goals you would like to achieve.

What are your challenges when it comes to strategic planning ? I look forward to hearing your comments. Until next time…
