Networking – Part of the Process

Submitted by Mitch Seigel on Tues, 7/3/2012

So you have another chamber of commerce mixer tonight, and two coffee meetings tomorrow. Is this part of what you do as a salesperson or are you hating the fact that you are wasting time meeting with other business people?

If you look at networking as a chore and extra work, then you need to re-examine the networking process and the value it holds toward your success. The relationships you gain through networking will come through at times you least expect it. Remember, it’s not the people you meet but the people they know who will be worth their weight in gold.

A few key tips on gaining the most out of your networking experiences; plan ahead, be prepared, and follow up. Do not try and meet everyone at the mixer; shoot for five or six and have deeper conversations with them about what they do and how you can help them.

Make sure you have enough business cards when you go to an event and be sure and have a pen and paper with you to write notes. After you part from a person with a new relationship write a few quick notes so you remember something significant about the person, or possibly an action step you need to take in maintaining or enhancing the relationship.

Most of all, plan to have fun when you network, and you will have fun! Remember, the other person may be as nervous about the proposition of meeting new people as you are. That may even be the basis for your first conversation. In any case, make networking a regular habit, not that extra thing you’ve got to do. In no time at all you will develop relationships that will extend to your bottom line.

What are your challenges when it comes to Networking? I look forward to hearing your comments. Until next time…
